Afforadable Private Schools in Asia
Research shows that Affordable Private Schools (APS) stretch across Asia, but comprehensive research and data highlight high levels of market activity in India and China. India, home to more than a fifth of the world’s population, has a growing number of APS because of a perceived decline in the quality of public education. Parental demand for better education has led social entrepreneurs and teachers to open low-cost schools that will provide more educational opportunities to poor communities. There are an estimated 75,000 APS in low-income areas across India that follow the national curriculum, and according to the independent auditor KPMG, an estimated 90 million Indian students attend privately owned schools. The 2009 Pratham Annual Status of Education Report showed that in 2008, private school enrollment among children ages 6 to 14 was about 22 percent, up from 16 percent in 2005.
Most research on Asia’s APS to date focuses on India, Pakistan and China.
